Help: getting started

Five short steps. You can set everything up for an older relative in ten minutes.

1. Install the app on your phone

Open the Download page on your Android phone, tap Download APK and follow the five steps under the button. iPhone is not supported yet.

2. Register with your phone number

1. Open Chatem and tap Continue.
2. Enter your number with the country code, for example +1 for the USA, and tap Continue.
3. Add your name and photo so relatives recognise you. They are sent encrypted; the server can't see them.

Already use Chatem on another phone or computer? Don't register again: link the new device with a QR code instead (step 4). Registering the same number again moves the account to the new device and signs the old ones out.

3. Find people and start chatting

• Open Contacts and allow access to your address book: you will see who is already on Chatem, and can invite the others with a link.
• Or tap New chat and enter a phone number.
• In a chat: the microphone button records a voice note, the paper clip sends photos, videos and files, and the call button starts an audio call.

4. Link your computer with a QR code

1. Install Chatem on your Windows computer and choose This is a computer: link to my phone. A QR code appears.
2. On your phone open Settings → Devices → Link a computer.
3. Keep Also copy chat history on if you want your old chats on the computer, and point the camera at the code.
4. Done: your chats open on the computer. New messages arrive on both.

5. Set up Claude Code on your PC (optional)

For people who use Claude Code. You need a Claude subscription and a Windows computer that stays on. Claude is a trademark of Anthropic; Chatem is not affiliated with Anthropic.

1. On the computer open Settings → Claude Code on this computer → Set up. Setup installs what is missing (Node.js, Python, ffmpeg, speech recognition and voice). If a step needs you, do what it says in the window that opened; setup then continues by itself.
2. Sign in to Claude when asked (once).
3. In File Explorer, right-click a project folder and choose Open Claude (Chatem). On Windows 11 it is under Show more options. Or type claude-nexum in a terminal opened in that folder.
4. The first time, the folder gets its own bot, for example “INVEST-bot”, and its chat appears on all your devices. Claude asks once to confirm on the computer: press Enter in its window. Your phone then gets “INVEST-bot is active”.
5. Now write or send voice notes to the bot from your phone. Answers come as text or voice; permission requests come as Allow / Deny buttons.

Simple mode for older relatives

Open Settings and turn on Simple mode: larger text and buttons, fewer details, no accidental swipes. The language follows the phone, or can be chosen in Settings → Language.

Something doesn't work?

• Messages are not arriving: check the internet connection. Messages wait on the server and arrive as soon as the phone is back online.
• No notifications: allow notifications for Chatem in the phone settings, and exclude it from battery saving.
• Bot shows “offline”: the computer is asleep or turned off, or Claude was stopped there.
